Mass Effectiveness

January 18th, 2010 (06:08 pm)

current mood: annoyed

It's been a while since I posted and what gets me to finally post? A game review.

Mass inEffectivenessCollapse )

In other news I spent the past week playing Lucas Arts the Dig. I admit this one got by me in the hay day of adventure games but god was it fun to play. The puzzles were extremely mind bending requiring me to think more lucidly about being on an alien planet messing with alien devices without an instruction manual. I spent 2 hours each day devoted to playing it and I'll gladly do it again in a heart beat(once I've forgotten the solutions). As cliched as the characters were, they were cliched to the point of being slightly comical. The lead being played by Robert Patrick drove me crazy thinking "where the hell do I know that voice?" till he said "have you seen this boy?" I would break the Dig down to a PnC adventure game with a very Myst like world, 3 Monkey Island characters, delightfully enigmatic puzzles and nifty alien lifeforms that made you think "cooooooool" a lot. For $4 on steam to get that and the Indiana Jones adventures and Loom, I'd say I got away with robbery.

Fun times for adventure games and PS: I hate video game RPGs.

Workplace Douchebaggery

December 14th, 2009 (10:10 pm)

current mood: angry

Ok, apparently early on tonight I didn't run a check the build I worked on in every way but one completed...the one way it didn't complete is probably the most important. Well I'm working on several other issues when my coworker says "Dude, you made a mistake with this site." Now I was on the phone and working on other shit so I told him "wait until I'm done." an hour and a half later he explains to me what mistake I made was in the most condescending way which riled me up to begin with. Then he says "so did you fix it?" to which my response was "baking soda? you took the call didn't you fix it?" So he says "it was your site you fix it!" Meanwhile, the site's been waiting for resolution now for well over 2 hours.

What's luke warm

October 13th, 2009 (06:27 pm)

current mood: amused
current song: Bolt theme

Well about a month ago or so I picked up the Bolt game for 360. Well after finally getting tired of hour after hour of Firefight, I decided to give ODST a rest and pull out ANYTHING that didn't involve those rat bastard buggers. To be honest I had forgotten I HAD Bolt, and it gave me a few hours of relaxation yesterday morning.

Basically the game works out as you play the tv series(as watched on DVD by Rhino). The fact they use the concept that Rhino is watching you control Bolt through the DVD set he's watching makes anytime you pull up a menu both annoying and humorous. Rhino spews out almost constant remarks about whatever menu you've just pulled up or what menu item you're about to select. On the whole, the effect adds entertainment value to the game as a whole(as you get Rhino's comments even when you just pause the game). As for the gameplay itself, there's essentially 3 different games played in tandem.

1) Play as Bolt beating the stuffing out of Calico's cat oriented troops and dodging traps and such. Really it's just move into room and bash B, X, and Y for the various combos using Superbark and Laservision to trigger key events.

2) Play as Penny trying to break through various regions of the environment in a quasi Solid Snake / Splinter Cell fashion. She relies on sneak attacks which are hideously repetitive but as combat is NOT what her playtime revolves around I consider that short coming negligable. What is focused on is instead a light version of almost Prince of Persia acrobatics.

3) Play as Penny hacking Calico's various computer systems. This is a mini game that plays like a basic version of Geometry Wars. Probably the only part of the game that actually has a limited number of lives. This game mode also has a separate mini game set in the main menu.

Throughout the game there are power ups to help level both Bolt and Penny and the storyline is short but fun. The game does contain the highly dreaded Quicktime Events, but as Penny it's basically the punishment for getting caught by the guards and Bolt has it on occasion for things your controls just don't give you the options for(like grabbing a missile in his mouth and spinning it back on the Copter that shot it). As it is the game is worth a $20 price tag and I can see it working a $30 price tag, but no more than that. Definitely worth a rental if you liked the movie and you like games like Spyro.

Also on my books is Sam & Max Season 2 being released for XBLA tomorrow. I WILL be buying that, so fun times shall be had by all....or at least me.

Lately I've been missing all those GameCube games I used to have. I've decided once I have the big screen tv I'm going to pick up a Wii. Definitely putting this stuff at the top of my '09 wish list for my b-day and Christmas.

GC - Eternal Darkness
GC - Mario Kart Double Dash
GC - Metroid Prime
GC - Metroid Prime Echos
(possibly Metroid Prime Trigoly)
Wii - Metroid Prime 3
GC - Star Fox Adventures
GC - Star Fox Assault

Also, for those interested, the new Wolfenstein for XBox360 plays more like Deus Ex than a traditional FPS. There are hub levels and you walk around talking to a lot of NPCs. Lots of exploration intended in the levels and a shit ton of story line. The weapon upgrades that you can buy make it feel almost nostalgic to play it. Chaz I think you might enjoy this game. ^.^

August 28th, 2009 (07:52 pm)

current mood: bouncy

Well the current game project is coming along. I've got the netcode working. Trying to work out the best method I can employ to handle different events. The effects work perfectly. The only bug I've left in so far intentionally is that the sky is random for each box that connects to a game. Apart from that, every box sees the same terrainmap. For some odd reason objects that were present in the environment BEFORE a client joins in have stopped appearing on the client's screen. But anything that happens after the client has joined show up fine.

Still trying to work out when the best time to check for projectiles and other created objects. Thinking I might just assign the world to each object so they can run system calls from their update functions.

On the upshot I have basic physics working fine. Though playing with the gravity factor is FUN! Right now I have grenades implimented, but I didn't render a grenade model until just before leaving for work. This means that you have to hit the debug flag to see the bounding spheres for objects to see the grenades. I'm still happy with it.^.^

Debating on activating a 3rd dev account and enabling both my dev accounts with Live GOLD just so I can test Live. I'm terrified that latency is going to break the game. Right now I'm limiting the game to 1 player per box but I think I may shortly add in split screen. We'll see.

Anywho, screenshots will be coming shortly....once I get a capture card.
